1986年9月下旬,肯德基公司开始考虑如何打入人口最多的中国市场,发掘这个巨大市场中所蕴含的巨大潜力。虽然前景乐观,但是诸多难题也使肯德基的决策者们倍感头痛,犹豫不决。对这家世界最大的鸡肉餐馆公司来说,面前的中国市场是完全陌生的:肯德基的纯西方风味是否能为中国消费者所接受?开发中国市场,不但需要技术资源,更重要的是还需要宝贵的管理资源。此外,从中国不能汇出大量的硬通货利润,即使是中等水平的汇出也不大可能。最为关键的是,要打入中国市场就必须选择一个特定的投资地点。而这又带有很大的不确定性。在情况并不明朗时,KFC决定对中国市场进行更全面更彻底的调查。面临的首要问题是:第一家肯德基店址应当选在何处?这一决策将对今后的盈利,对在中国其他地区的进一步开拓以及对投入管理资源时的决心等产生戏剧性的影响。KFC通过把降低风险的可能性与通过投资可能得到的潜在的收益加以比较,且考虑到当时在中国没有其他竞争者是进入的最佳时机。于是,在平衡了可能的风险和收益之后,决定暂时把北京作为一个起点。把北京作为肯德基进入中国的首选城市为肯德基在中国的成功奠定了坚实的基础。
